Supervising Student Employees

Student Employees can be an important factor in the success of University units. For supervisors, they offer a unique set of challenges and rewards. This session will provide an overview of the process for recruiting and hiring student employees and offer guidelines for their effective management. Participants will look at ways to ensure both the employee and the University get the most of student employment experiences. 

Information will be provided on:

*Steps, rules and policies regarding student hires

*Probationary Period

*Performance Reviews

*Discipline, Termination and Protection from Retaliation and the Right to Appeal




*New Background Check Requirements

*How do student employees differ from other employees in regards to interviewing, orientation, training, scheduling, motivation,and performance management

Facilitating this session will be Mary Cameron, Director of Student Employment and Associate Director of Human Resources and Equal Opportunity


Training will be held in Griggs Center, KSC and is open to supervisors of UMD student employees.
